OLIVE OIL IN PORTUGAL

Growing olive trees and producing olive oil has always been an important part of our wealth over time.

Since the Middle Ages, the clergy protected olive trees, as an important source of lighting, food and commercial exchanges. We have records of the olive oil trade since the 16th century XII with the conquests in North Africa and more intensively in period of maritime discoveries.

In 2022 Portugal was proudly the fourth largest olive oil producing country ( fouth country within Europe).

MONTE DO CARRASCAL

OLIVE TREES AND OLIVES

The first year when we arrived at the Monte was for pruning and characterization of our olive trees (Olea europea L.), of the Galega variety. They are typically Portuguese olive trees, adapted to the heat of summer and cold of winter, which is felt in this area of Santiago do Cacém.

The poor 201 harvest was the result of many years of neglect and a generally unproductive year at national level, compared to the following year, 2022, in which Portugal exceeds 180 thousand tons of olive oil.

Despite the small amount of 2021, the quality os the olives and olive oil obtained was notorious. An Extra Virgin that filled us with motivation for our Monte do Carrascal family project.

HARVEST AND OLIVE MILL

The olive picking is done manually, with the traditional techniques os tripping or ripping the olive trees. These are the most harmless methods for olive trees and thus preserve the habitat of the various species of birds that surrond us.

We do not have an intensive olive grove.

A “graded” olive, that is big and beatiful, could only make ecceptional olive oil in the mill. Here, too, only mechanical precesses are used for the production of olive oil.
